Boy actor featured in special-edition Barbie commercial — VIDEO

Moschino Barbie, a collaboration between Mattel and Italian fashion house Moschino with a price tag of $150, sold out in less than an hour last week, but that's not the only stand-out with this doll. The commercial for the limited-edition Barbie prominently features a boy actor.

In the commercial, the young boy with a blonde Mohawk declares, "Moschino Barbie is so fierce!" before placing Barbie's gold and black purse on her arm. Later on, the boy is shown "answering" Barbie's phone and saying, "It's for you," followed by a wink. 

During a season that sparks debate on gender-specific toys, the Washington Post wrote, Mattel seems to have landed Barbie in gender-neutral territory.

In August, Target announced its toy section would be redesigned to remove signage indicating gender in the children's toy area. This happened after a woman in Ohio posted a photo of a sign at Target that separated "Building Sets" and "Girls' Building Sets."
