Car hits hydrant, is swallowed by resulting sink hole — VIDEO
A car got stuck in a watery sinkhole created when it struck a fire hydrant in Liberty, Mo. Wednesday afternoon.
It happened about 3:45 p.m. at South Withers Road and South Wales Drive near the Liberty Community Center.
“We tried to swerve over and we hit the fire hydrant,” said the car’s passenger, Inez Oard.
Before they ended up with their car halfway underground with water bubbling up from below, Oard remembers being in the car with her big brother Austin behind the wheel. They were on the way to her brother’s job interview.
Oard said the last thing she remembers is seeing a car coming straight for them.
“(Then) Austin was just calling for me to get out of the car,” she said.
Police said the driver ran into a fire hydrant, causing water to shoot out and flood the area. The impact and gushing of water created a sink hole that the car got trapped in, planted hood first into the ground.
“I had to crawl over to the other side, to the driver side, because I couldn’t get out my way, it was too flooded,” Oard said.
The streets turned into a small river and some homes lost power. As the car sank deeper, all neighbors could do was watch.
“I saw the back end bouncing on top of the water that was spewing all over the road,” Tammy Barton said.
“Nothing happens around here, it’s a quiet little neighborhood, so when something does happen we want to be a part of it,” Desiree Verdusco said. “We just want to see it taken out, see what the aftermath is.”
When Chopper5 flew over the scene, only the back half of the car was visible. Parts of the intersection were closed while water crews worked to turn off the water.
Crews turned the water off shortly before 6 p.m.
Austin still made it to his job interview. As the streets dried up and the car was pulled out, his sister was thankful it ended like it did and that no one was injured.
“If Austin would have waited a little bit or wasn’t thinking, we would have head on collided with the other car,” Oard said.
Police say that the other driver who failed to yield may be ticketed for causing the crash.
