Celebrate Halloween all week long throughout Henderson

Whether it's a scary ghost, a wicked witch or a favorite movie character, no costume will go to waste on Halloween with plenty of candy-collecting events planned around Henderson.

The District at Green Valley Ranch, 2240 Village Walk Drive, is offering two trick-or-treat events from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday , giving away more than 300,000 pieces of candy.

For children of all ages, there is the sixth annual GhostWalk on Main Street. The area is expected to encompass the Halloween spirit with lighting, music and special effects. At the center of Main Street is "The Big Guy," a 20-foot ghost.

Children can go shop to shop and pick up treats.

Rob Benson, who does marketing for The District, said the GhostWalk was so popular that The District decided to add another event to take place at the same time.

"We decided to go with different themes on both sides of the property so our guests could experience two fun, unique events within the same locations," Benson said.

On the east side of the property is the fourth annual Carnival of Horrors, which might not be suitable for children younger than 8. The event has the theme of a rundown traveling carnival full of zombie sideshow characters and a dilapidated carousel, which guests can ride. Carnival of Horrors also will hand out candy.

Both events are free.

A Halloween event is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Water Street District. Kids of all ages are invited to Trick-or-Treat Water Street to collect treats at the area's businesses, shops and restaurants. Live entertainment is scheduled for the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St. The first 500 children can enjoy free pumpkins and jack-o-lantern painting. For more information, visit waterstreetdistrict.com.

The Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road, plans to take in trick-or-treaters from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday for Mall-o-ween. Children can participate in activities such as a costume contest, playing in a pumpkin patch and "Scaryoke" in the food court. Participants can stop by guest services for a free bag.

The Village at Lake Las Vegas, 30 Strada Di Villaggio, also is scheduled to host a trick-or-treat event from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Kim Becker, a spokeswoman with the city of Henderson's Parks and Recreation Department, said the department's biggest events are Trunk or Treat from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road, and Haunted at the Ranch from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Whitney Ranch Indoor Pool, 1575 Galleria Drive.

"Trunk or T reat has become Henderson's premier safe trick-or-treating event, and it continues to grow each year," Becker said. "Kids love this event because besides trick-or-treating, there are plenty of activities and things to do. Parents love it because they can bring kids of all ages and it's so inexpensive."

The cost for the event is $2 per child. Parents are admitted free .

Becker said they expect more than 3,000 people to take part .

Haunted at the Ranch launched last year, "and it turned out to be hugely popular," Becker said. "This year, we've expanded the event to add a haunted house element."

The event features games, bounce houses and a haunted house tour. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Becker said there are other events such as Tot's Trick or Treat, which is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., and from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at Whitney Ranch Recreation Center. The free event is for children 1 to 5.

"It gives our little ones a chance to trick-or-treat without the scarier elements you might find when you have bigger kids," Becker said.

About 700 to 1,000 children are expected to show up at each center, Becker said.

The event is free, but people are encouraged to bring two canned food items to donate to the Henderson Salvation Army.

The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, 350 E. Galleria Drive, is hosting a Halloween event from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday. Children 6 to 12 can hear more about birds with spooky reputations such as crows, ravens, barn owls and turkey vultures.

The event is free. People can register online at cityofhenderson.com/parks.

Henderson Libraries also is offering Halloween-themed events at different locations this week.

From 11 a.m. to noon today at the Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway, children 2 to 6 and their parents can assemble tasty Halloween treats . The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. For more information, call 207-4260.

The Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway, is planning a Halloween carnival from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. People of all ages are encouraged to wear a costume and join in on games, crafts and stories.

At the James I. Gibson Library, 100 W. Lake Mead Parkway, a Halloween extravaganza is scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. The ninth annual event is expected to feature trick-or-treating and games. The event is free. People can find out more information or register for the event at 565-8402.

Every Halloween needs a time for scary stories, which are being told from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Green Valley Library. Children ages 5 to 11 are invited to the story session. The event is limited to 25 children. For more information, call 207-4260.

Residents still can go trick-or-treating from house to house. Keith Paul, a spokesman with the Henderson Police Department, said the suggested hours for treat-or-treating are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday .

"They are only suggested hours," Paul said.

Paul said children should be accompanied by an adult.

The department encourages children to wear bright clothing, use make up instead of masks so vision isn't impaired, make sure costumes aren't too long to prevent tripping, attach reflectors to costumes and carry flashlights or glow sticks.

When arriving home, parents are encouraged to inspect all treats and dispose of anything no longer sealed or in factory wrapping.

Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to be extra careful on Halloween night.
