Dermatologist to offer free
skin cancer screenings for seniors

Dermatologist Jaldeep Daulat plans to provide free skin cancer screenings from 10 to 11 a.m. Sept. 17 at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive.

Participants must be 65 or older and have a current city of Las Vegas Active Adult Center membership. Cost for membership is $2 and can be purchased at the door.

Daulat, with Las Vegas Skin and Cancer Clinics, is a member of Quality Care IPA, an independent physician association in Southern Nevada.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, accounting for nearly half of all cancers in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society. The most serious form of skin cancer, melanoma, is expected to account for more than 75,000 new cases of skin cancer this year.

Space is limited. Loose-fitting clothing should be worn.

Ski & Snowboard resort raises $2,000 for Volunteer Association

Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort raised $2,000 for the Spring Mountain Volunteer Association during its annual Festival in the Pines event Aug. 4 at the resort, 6725 Lee Canyon Road on Mount Charleston.

About 575 people attended. This year's donation was the largest the SMVA has received in the 21-year history of the event that was created as a fundraiser to support the nonprofit.

Guests enjoyed arts and crafts from local vendors, live entertainment, scenic chairlift rides and a visit from the U.S. Forest Service mascot, Smokey Bear. Funds were raised via a raffle for items donated by vendors, and LVSSR also donated a portion of proceeds generated from its food and beverage sales and scenic chairlift rides during the event.

NIGHT HIKE TO EXPLORE WORLD OF BATS
AT RED ROCK CANYON

A night hike is planned for Wednesday at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. A ranger will lead a hike and discussion on the night world of bats. The easy hike is about a half-mile long and includes sitting on the ground for observation and moving up and down the trail.

The hike is for those 15 or older. Space is limited, and registration is required. To register or to get the hike's start time and location, call 515-5367.

TRAVEL CLUB TO MEET AT THE TAP HOUSE

The Las Vegas Single Social Travel Club invites prospective members to its meetings, which are scheduled the fourth Tuesday of each month. The next meeting is set for today at The Tap House, 5589 W. Charleston Blvd. The meet-and-greet portion is set to start at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room, and the formal meeting is set for 7 p.m.

Discussions focus on traveling from day trips, local events, in-state and out-of-state traveling, cruises and international traveling. A guest speaker frequently is featured. The meeting closes about 8 p.m. when appetizers are served and the group mingles. For more information, call 888-324-2028.

CONSTRUCTION TO START SOON
ON NEW HOSPICE FACILITY

Solari Hospice Care plans to build a new 12-bed, 13,000-square-foot Inpatient Hospice Center on a 2.09-acre parcel of land at the southwest corner of West Craig Road and Conough Lane.

Las Vegas-based JMA Architects has been hired for the project.

Solari Hospice Care, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in Las Vegas this year, currently operates a 12-bed Inpatient Hospice Center at 5530 S. Jones Blvd. and hospice services for residents throughout Clark County.

Plans are to break ground on its new Inpatient Hospice Center in approximately 120 days, with a goal to complete construction and open its doors in late 2013. For more information, visit solarihospice.com.

WESTSIDE NEWCOMERS CLUB
TO MEET SEPT. 5

The Westside Newcomers Club plans to host a coffee event for prospective members at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 5 at Grace in the Desert Episcopal Church, 2004 Spring Gate Lane. The coffee events are planned for the first Wednesday of each month.

WNC is a social club for women who have lived in the area for 10 years or sless or who have life-changing events such as retirement. It offers a wide variety of activities. A luncheon with a program is planned for the second Wednesday of each month.
