Cop shoots at dog, misses, shoots 4-year-old girl

A Columbus, Ohio police officer accidentally wounded a 4-year-old girl when he fired at a charging dog.

The girls, identified as Ava Ellis by family and neighbors, is in stable condition at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

The officer, who has not been identified, was reportedly on a follow up to a hit-and-run Friday afternoon when he heard a woman nearby pleading for help.

When inside the home, Columbus police spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis said, a dog charged at the officer and he fired once. The bullet missed the dog but struck a 4-year-old in the leg.

“[The officer] was a big guy and they have tasers and clubs and stuff,” neighbor Gary Parsley said. “I don’t know why you would raise a gun. I really don’t agree with him just pulling his gun out and trying to shoot the dog.”
