Dining pick of the week: Straight from Philly Steakout
September 26, 2011 - 11:17 pm
2540 Anthem Village Drive, 558-3939
It's time to rejoice. After having to drive to the west side for a genuine Philly steak sandwich, Eastsiders now also can get one in Sun City Anthem. Cheesesteaks were invented in South Philadelphia in the 1930s at Pat's King of Steaks, where cooked beef was grilled and chopped, covered with cheese and placed on a long roll. Most include onions and peppers. Straight from Philly imports all elements from Philadelphia, including Amoroso rolls. Other favorites are the chicken cheesesteaks, cheesesteak hoagie with mayo, lettuce and tomato, and the Philly Fanatic Steak with chili and three cheeses. Cheesesteaks also can be made with mushrooms, marinara or pepper cheese. Several sandwiches are Italian hot sausage, meatball, grilled pastrami, roast pork, oven-roasted turkey, all-cheese hoagie and Italian hoagie with capacolla, genoa salami and pepper ham. Fish specials, served with fries and cole slaw, include whole rainbow trout, shrimp stuffed with lump crab and beer-battered haddock. Accompany that sandwich with french, cheddar cheese or chili cheese fries and grab a Tastykake on the way out. Plain steak starts at $7 and fish specials at $5.50. Straight from Philly is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. -- Jack Bulavsky
