1. Galleria at Sunset anniversary: The mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road, plans to mark its 20th anniversary from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 20. Activities will include live music and refreshments in The Plaza; free family entertainment in the Kohl's court; and a disc jockey, mini-makeovers, swag bags, treats and gift card giveaways in the Fashion Lounge in center court. 2. Nevada State College open house: The college plans the event for prospective students from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 18 on its expanded main campus at 1125 Nevada State Drive. Students with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or better will be eligible for on-the-spot academic scholarships. To qualify, prospective high school and transfer students must have an official transcript with them and meet all the requirements. Rose Garden: Forty-four varieties of roses can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's Southern Area Master Gardener's Rose Garden, 8050 Paradise Road. Rose varieties include hybrid teas, floribundas, shrubs, rugosas, damasks, noisettes and miniatures. The beds have engraved signage bearing the names of the roses, the varieties and the year of market introduction. The garden recently received a certificate of achievement in the Small Garden class during the national Sunshine 'n Roses Pacific Southwest District's annual convention. The district spans Southern California, Arizona, parts of Nevada, New Mexico and West Texas. The garden is maintained by Master Gardeners and members of the South Valley Rose Society. Native Milkweed Seed Study: Native rush milkweed seeds are set to be available free from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at the Master Gardener Help Desk inside the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. Those who pick up the packets must take part in a study involving monarch butterflies. The plants encourage the butterflies to lay eggs. Participants will receive instructions, as well as periodic surveys to track seed germination, plant survival and visits by monarch butterflies. Gowan Road. The exhibit addresses issues currently facing society, including racial profiling and gender injustices. Pahrump Hot Air Balloon Festival: The annual event is set for noon Feb. 26 and 8 a.m. Feb. 27 and 28 at Petrack Park, 150 state Route 160, in Pahrump, about 60 miles west of Las Vegas. The family-friendly festival is set to bring together more than 20 hot air balloon pilots from the western states, music, entertainment, food, arts and crafts, and more. Events are scheduled throughout the three days, including glow balloon events. Color Run: The fifth annual event, dubbed the "Happiest 5K on the Planet, is set for 8 a.m. Feb, 27 in downtown Las Vegas, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Three Square food bank. Runners, walkers or sprinters of all ages and athletic abilities will be bathed in an array of colors and island scents as they cruise through a scene of palm trees, vibrant arches and festive music. Upon finishing, Color Runners can celebrate at the Rainbow Beach during the Finish Festival with a color throw celebration, music, dancing and photo opportunities. Cirque Run: Cirque du Soleil is set to host its 15th annual Run Away with Cirque du Soleil community 5K run and 1-mile fun walk March 12 at the Springs Preserve, 333 S. Speaker Scott R. Abella is set to share stories of conservation projects across the national park system, including many local parks, such as the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West: The group is set to perform free at 7 p.m. March 3 at the Henderson Convention Center, 200 S. Water St. The band offers a variety of music, including standard concert band/wind ensemble, orchestral, military marches, jazz, pop, Broadway standards and patriotic songs. Free tickets are set to be available in advance from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays at the center, and limited tickets may be available at the event. Dodgeball Tournament: After-School All-Stars Las Vegas plans the fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 5 at UNLV's Mendenhall Center, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. Dozens of teams comprising local companies and individuals are set to compete at the event. Spectator VIP tickets are $30 in advance or $40 at the door, and spectator general admission tickets are $15 each in advance or $20 at the door. Children 12 or younger are admitted free. Corporate participants may enter for $500 per team, while the cost for individuals and nonprofits is $250 per team. Teams must have between eight and 10 players. At least one member of each team must be of the opposite sex. Awards will be presented to the championship team and to the best-dressed one.
