More than 500 cyclists will ride in Summerlin’s bike event

More than 500 cyclists will pedal through the master-planned community of Summerlin and adjacent Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area today in the 10th annual Tour de Summerlin. The ride is one of Southern Nevada's largest and most scenic cycling events.

Tour de Summerlin kicks off at 7 a.m. at The Vistas Community Park, 11311 Alta Drive. This year's event features both a 40- and 80-mile ride to accommodate riders of varying levels. The rides pass through 11 of Summerlin's 19 villages, giving riders a great overview of life in Summerlin, according to Kevin Orrock, vice president of master-planned communities for The Howard Hughes Corporation, developer of Summerlin. "Summerlin shows well and it lives as good as it looks," he said.

"Summerlin offers some of the most scenic and popular routes for valley cyclists," said Randy McGhie, owner of McGhie's Ski Bike & Board and organizer of Tour de Summerlin. "The community naturally attracts cyclists, making it the ideal community to host our annual ride, which originated in Summerlin 10 years ago. Every year gets bigger and better, and this year is no exception."

Tour de Summerlin is one of several spring events. The community recently hosted the Summerlin Half Marathon, which attracted nearly 600 participants.

Upcoming events include the Summerlin Kids Mix, an outdoor family friendly festival on May 7 at Summerlin Centre Community Park, 1800 S. Town Center Drive; and the Summerlin Desert Clean-up on May 14 at The Paseos Park, 12122 Desert Moon. Event information is available online at summerlin.com/events or facebook.com/summerlinlv.

Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., Summerlin began to take shape in 1990s. For more information, visit summerlin.com or facebook.com/summerlinlv.
