Sun City aliante Residents invited
to veterans discussion
A program featuring Paul J. Rice, director of the VA Visual Impairment Service, is set for 7 p.m. today in the Vista Ballroom for Sun City Aliante Residents. Doug Bradford, director of the USO at McCarran International Airport, is also scheduled to speak and answer questions.
A PowerPoint presentation showcasing the ongoing services offered by the USO to assist and welcome military personnel and their families traveling to and from Las Vegas also is planned. Golden Hand Service Awards
to be presented Thursday
The Cultural Diversity Foundation has planned its fourth annual Golden Hand Service Awards ceremony from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas, 710 W. Lake Mead Blvd. The scheduled master of ceremonies is KLAS Channel 8 news anchor Chris Saldana. The recipients are Debbie Conway, Clark County Recorder; Bob Fowler, volunteer fundraiser; Donna Brown, with the International Festival Association; Luanne Wagner, an educator at Clark High School; Stacey Wedding, principal and founder of Professionals in Philanthropy LLC; and Willie Fields, owner of Vegas Shoes. Aliante Library book club to meet
The Aliante Library Book Club for Adults' next meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday to discuss Kathryn Stockett's "The Help." Each month, book club participants meet at the library at 2400 W. North Las Vegas Library Lego Club
set to meet Wednesday
The North Las Vegas Library Lego Club is set to meet at 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at 2300 Civic Center Drive. The club usually meets the last Wednesday of every month, but the next meetings are Nov. 30 and Dec. 21 as libraries will be closed the last week of December. Children of all ages are welcome to show off their creative abilities, and jigsaw puzzles will also be provided.
Hit the links and support a good cause sunday at painted desert
The first Chefs for Kids golf tournament is planned for Sunday at Painted Desert Golf Course, 5555 Painted Mirage Drive. Registration is at 7 a.m., and festivities commence at 8 a.m. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's Chefs for Kids program is a joint effort of the American Culinary Federation Chefs of Las Vegas and Cooperative Extension. The extension's learning gardens are in North Las Vegas.
Early registration for the tournament is $100 per player before Thursday and $110 after. The format is a four-person scramble. Players can pick your own team or will be assigned to a team.
The fee includes greens fee, cart, range balls, luncheon following, snacks on several holes and a team photo. Awards for winning team, longest drive and closest to the pin on a par-3 hole will be presented.

Sun City Aliante Residents can attend 'The Lion King' at discounted price
Sun City Aliante r esidents can attend a performance of "The Lion King" at 4 p.m. Saturday . The cost is $62, which includes the show, transportation and gratuity. No refunds are allowed, and 20 people are needed to attend. The bus will depart Sun City at 2:30 p.m. and return after the show about 6:45 p.m. Sign up at the monitor's desk.

to open new shows
Two shows are set to open at CSN Cheyenne campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave., Fine Arts Gallery.
Eric Pawloki's mixed media works and Blair Vaughn-Gruler's paintings are set to show from Friday through Dec. 2.

Enroll in kiddie college
The City of North Las Vegas' Kiddie Kollege program at the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St., is enrolling for the 2011-2012 session.
Classes run through May.
Kiddie Kollege offers a positive recreational learning environment using creative art, music and constructive play for children 3, 4 and 5 years old.
Programs are offered two days per week: Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. Classes are two-hour sessions.
Walk-in registration is accepted at the Neighborhood Recreation Center.

Animal Foundation plans adopt-a-shelter-dog month
The Animal Foundation, Nevada's largest open-admission shelter at 655 N. Mojave Road, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have scheduled Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month through October. The foundation is encouraging local residents to find a new pet at the shelter by offering a $25 discount on the shelter dogs that have the hardest time finding new homes: pit bulls and Chihuahuas.

NEW ADOPT-A-PARK CLEANUP PROGRAM begins IN DEER SPRINGS PARK
About six businesses and neighborhood groups partnered with North Las Vegas officials to clean up Deer Springs Park, 6550 Aviary Way, as part of the city's new adopt-a-park pilot program.
The event at the 10-acre park drew about 30 to 50 volunteers from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 24. For more information about the city's community outreach services, call Kathi Thomas-Gibson at 633-5632.
City Council refinances bonds to save long term money
The North Las Vegas City Council voted 4-3 Oct. 5 to allow the city staff to restructure $137 million in bonds issued in 2002, 2003 and 2006 that funded public buildings such as courts, jail facilities and Civic Center Plaza. The refinancing is expected to save the city approximately $4.2 million as it pays back the debt at a lower interest rate.
The council cited similar action adopted in Clark County and the city of Henderson and by the Southern Nevada Water District to save money long-term.
The adopted action is Ordinance No. 2597.
Councilmembers Anita Wood and Robert Eliason voted against the ordinance.
