NY man sets car on fire trying to kill bedbugs

A man set his car on fire while trying to kill bedbugs, police in Eastport, N.Y., said.

Scott Kemery of Bridgehampton poured alcohol on the insects while sitting in his rental car in a grocery story parking lot on Tuesday, police said. He then lit a cigarette, setting the car interior on fire.

Detective Sgt. Edward Fitzgerald told Newsday that someone told the 44-year-old man the bedbugs would die if he poured alcohol on them.

Kemery was able to escape the car on his own. He was airlifted to a hospital with first- and second-degree burns.

Two other cars were damaged by the fire.
