Summerlin 20th anniversary 5k run/walk planned for Oct. 16

The master-planned community of Summerlin is continuing its 20th anniversary celebration with a 5K run/walk Oct. 16.

According to Kevin Orrock, top division president for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, the 5K is a natural fit for a community that features the state's most expansive, privately owned trail system.

"Summerlin's 150-plus-mile trail system is a nationally recognized community hallmark," Orrock said. "On any given day, you'll see hundreds of residents of all ages on the trails walking, cycling, running or socializing with neighbors. The trails are undoubtedly the most used and highest ranking amenity in Summerlin according to resident surveys. They are an integral and beautiful community feature we love to show off."

The 5K will start at Agave Mexican Restaurant in Canyon Pointe Shopping Center, 10820 W. Charleston Blvd., at 6:30 a.m. Participants will travel north on Pavilion Center toward The Arbors Tennis and Play Park before returning to Agave Mexican Restaurant. Breakfast burritos will be served for $5 from Agave's authentic street taco cart after the run.

There is no cost to participate in the 5K, but preregistration is required. Register before Oct. 13 by e-mailing Karry Rathje at krathje@ffwpr.com or calling 933-7777, ext. 306. The run is sponsored by Summerlin with support from Agave Mexican Restaurant and the Summerlin Striders Running Club.

The 5K run is one of several activities and events designed to highlight the community's 20th anniversary, a year-long celebration that will conclude in May 2011. For a complete list of activities and events in Summerlin, visit summerlin.com.
