Summerlin residents list favorites

Summerlin residents say the master-planned community offers amenities that promote a lifestyle of outdoor activity and healthy living.

Here is a top 10 list of reasons residents give for why they like living in Summerlin. The statements come from survey comments, Summerlin Facebook posts and general resident stories.

■ Astounding surroundings — Grand and picturesque Red Rock Canyon frames the western edge of Summerlin to create an unparalleled backdrop to the community. It’s also a year-round, world-class hiking, rock climbing, camping and cycling area that promotes an active, outdoor lifestyle.

■ Education a top priority — Summerlin is home to 28 schools, including the valley’s finest private schools such as Bishop Gorman High School and Meadows College Preparatory School. Half of Summerlin’s 12 public schools are rated five-star by Clark County School District, including five elementary schools and West Career and Technical Academy. Four institutions of higher learning, including College of Southern Nevada and Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, round out the community’s educational options.

■ Network of more than 150 parks — Parks of all sizes abound throughout the community. Major community parks offer amenities like baseball and soccer fields, volleyball and tennis courts, barbecue pavilions and swimming pools. Smaller neighborhood parks provide places to play close to home.

■ Miles of trails — Summerlin’s award-winning trail system ranks as the favorite outdoor amenity in annual surveys of community residents. More than 150 miles of trails provide places to walk, run, meet friends and neighbors and enjoy the outdoors.

■ Shopping, dining and entertainment — With 15 community and neighborhood retail centers, Summerlin is home to nearly 2 million square feet of retail space. Red Rock Resort is a major hub of entertainment and dining, and the community now has more than 100 restaurants.

■ Commitment to culture — Summerlin is home to the Donald W. Reynolds Cultural Center, home of Nevada Ballet Theater, as well as the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center. The library’s theatre is booked with community performances and events more than a year in advance.

■ Golf, golf and more golf — With nine golf courses, Summerlin is a golfer’s paradise. The community is home to Nevada’s only two Tournament Players Club courses, including TPC Summerlin, home of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

■ Neighborhood worship — Summerlin has 14 houses of worship, representing 12 different faiths, allowing residents to worship in their own neighborhoods.

■ Live well, stay well — With 450 private patient rooms and more than 1,400 physicians on staff, Summerlin Hospital Medical Center provides premier health care without leaving the community.

■ A full calendar, a full life — The Summerlin Council is a nonprofit community association that functions like a city parks and recreation department. The council organizes special events exclusively for residents; it organizes youth and adult sports leagues; and it provides fun and enriching classes for residents of all ages.
