Suspect in Ariz. high school murder-suicide got gun from classmate, police say

Glendale, AZ — Glendale police say the shooter in last week's murder suicide at Independence High School got the gun from a classmate. That 15-year-old male classmate reportedly got it from his house without his parents' permission.

May Kieu and Dorothy Dutiel died at the high school last Friday after one of them shot the other and then turned the gun on herself.

Police say the suspect approached a 15-year-old classmate on Thursday, telling him she needed it for protection; she promised to return the gun on Friday.

The classmate provided her a family-owned handgun from his home without the permission or knowledge of his parents.

Police say that classmate has spoken to detectives and was cooperative. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office will review his involvement in the matter.

May and Dorothy were sophomores. Police have not officially released their names, but several friends have identified them on social media and to our reporters at the school.

In 911 recordings, released Tuesday night by the Glendale Police Department, several students are heard calling for help.

"I heard two loud pops," one caller said.

Dispatchers struggle to figure out if the officers will arrive to find an active shooting scene.

As officers raced to the school, dispatchers told students to stay in their classrooms and lock the doors.

They were found next to each other, and the weapon was found beside them, according to Glendale Police Officer Tracey Breeden.

Each of the 15-year-old girls suffered a single gunshot wound, Breeden said.

Officers located the students down near the cafeteria area under a covered patio on the southeast portion of campus.

Although the investigation is not complete, investigators working the case say evidence found at the scene leads them to believe that one female took the life of the other female before taking her own life.

During the processing of the scene, a suicide note was located.

Information gathered by detectives reveal the two girls were very close friends, appearing to also be in a relationship.
