Officer-involved shootings are an inevitable byproduct of law enforcement, and police are given wide latitude in deciding when and how to use deadly force to protect their lives or the lives of others. And when an officer shoots and kills, the effects extend into the community beyond just the officer and the dead. Justified or not, life has been lost and both officer and the family of the dead are left to deal with the consequences.
