Lexus of Henderson sales representative Frederick Shelton has a pretty good sense of humor. Press him a little and he might even fire off a few jokes, something he’s accustomed to doing as part of his side gig as a stand-up comedian.
Shelton honed his public-speaking skills at Toastmasters International and then took them a step further, performing at the Comedy Store in La Jolla, Calif. Shelton said the comedy club’s general manager was so impressed with his stage presence that he was asked to be a regular. Shelton declined the offer, aiming to be a full-time father for his then- 8-year-old daughter.
But the showbiz bug never really left the aspiring comedian. In 2009 Shelton decided to participate in a Toastmasters International Humorous Speaking Contest and won his club’s contest. He would win the area contest and then the division contest, taking first place against the best from Toastmasters clubs throughout Southern Nevada. He was finally eliminated in the District Championship for Nevada, California and Arizona.
“I didn’t win but had a great time.” Shelton said. “I got back into comedy to grow and improve myself and spread my wings. The skills you learn in Toastmasters never leave you. It’s the best club in the world for personal and professional growth.”
Shelton won his club’s contest again this year and will compete Sept. 14 in the Las Vegas area contest.
When Shelton isn’t selling new or preowned vehicles at Lexus of Henderson, he instructs veterans at Creech and Nellis Air Force bases on the proper way to write a resume and prepare for job interviews. His expertise comes from a previous career at a personnel agency.
“I have always done volunteer work,” Shelton said. “I have volunteered at our local schools, homeless shelters and other places. I am a veteran and have always had a warm spot in my heart for those in the military who have given so much for our country.”
As part of a pledge to contribute to his community, Shelton has an arrangement with the management at Lexus of Henderson to donate $100 to a local charity or educational program for every referral he gets that results in a vehicle sale.
