INTEL: PR no-no's, holiday shopping behavior and a restaurant anniversary

Consider this a part two to the item on PR reps from mid-October.

Don’t send multiple releases, spread a week apart, all with the wrong state and publication in them when you’re pitching a media outlet. Throughout October one overzealous rep sent the same release three times, all directed to the wrong state.

With each pitch, a new newspaper was named, in a different state, presumably unbeknownst to the rep. In early October we were based in Baltimore working for the Denver Post. A week later we moved to Honolulu. We know you’re often pitching multiple outlets, especially with a subject that could work nationally. Just don’t rub our noses in it.

We wanted to cover it, we really did. We were just confused.

Soon, a Las Vegas staple may be back on the local dining scene.

Viva Mercado’s Mexican Bar and Grill is expected to open at 9440 W. Sahara Ave. in Village Square by Nov. 14. Hey retailers, here’s some insight as to what consumers may be thinking this season.

PriceGrabber’s Winter Holiday Shopping Survey found that 69 percent of consumers plan to shop at the same retailers as they did last year. When asked why, 70 percent said they would remain loyal to certain retailers because of good customer service. According to the survey, online retailers and discount stores continue to remain the most popular destinations for holiday shopping. When asked to select all the types of stores where consumers plan to shop for gifts, 75 percent chose online retailers and 68 percent said they would visit discount stores. The survey, conducted on PriceGrabber.com from Sept. 13 to 25, 2013, includes responses from 2,887 U.S. online shopping consumers.

“As shoppers are looking for convenience and excellent customer service, retailers are aiming to drive shoppers’ wallet share with strong incentives like free shipping, coupons and aggressive price cuts,” said James Brown, PriceGrabber’s vice president of sales. “According to the survey, most consumers plan to research their holiday gift purchases in advance.”

Despite what may be on everyone’s holiday wish list, consumers can bet on receiving clothing again this year. When PriceGrabber respondents were asked to select the items they are likeliest to purchase for a gift this season, clothing topped the list at 64 percent. Gift cards ranked second at 47 percent, while 37 percent opted for books, DVDs or games.
