Top workplaces, large: 3. Caesars Entertainment Corp.

Caesars Entertainment comes in at No. 3 on the list of top workplaces in Las Vegas in the large-company category.

“It’s a big honor and something we’re very excited about,” says Jamie Stratton, human resources director of its Las Vegas properties. “We work hard every year to ensure we’re providing a great place to work.”

Chris Smith, corporate director of human resources, says in the past year the company has focused even more on employee well-being with its onsite wellness center gym and access to quick care services with immunizations and physical therapy.

In addition, Smith says the company focused on leadership training and growth and development of supervisors, which translates to a higher performance of the people they oversee.

“We know in the industry that the supervisor role is the most important,” Smith says.

Caesars has 1,500 full-time supervisors in Las Vegas and another 500 who fill a dual role, Smith says. Supervisors tend to feel sandwiched between the employees they oversee and the management above them and are confused on how to align themselves, he says.

“More than ever we are focusing on the supervisors with our branded program,” Smith says. “We want to make them understand their importance. Everyone deserves a great and inspiring boss and by focusing on those supervisors and investing in them they will be more motivated to inspire team members to provide great service.”

That makes for a better workplace and explains why employees have bolstered the company’s ranking this year to No. 3, Smith says.

“I think the relationship between supervisors and employees at the end of the day keeps you there,” Smith says. “The perks only get you in. They don’t keep you.”

In managers meetings, the focus is on the company’s mission values, which employees say affects morale. That is something driven by supervisors and managers and can’t be done with a poster or email, Smith says.

Those values include celebrating success and integrity, Stratton says.

“It’s a good measure that employees voted us a best place to work,” Stratton says. “It shows they are proud to work for us, and it’s a big deal. It helps us from a recruiting standpoint. We want people to want to work for us. In human resources, we talk about the concept of making sure only the best work for the best. We want to be a great place to work to have the best talent.”

There’s a lot of excitement among employees for 2014 with the opening of the High Roller, the world’s largest Ferris wheel, and the reopening of the former Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall &Saloon as a boutique hotel, which will create hundreds of jobs, Smith says.

“Nobody stays at a job because of bingo or ice cream but being treated fairly and communicated with in a clear fashion,” Stratton says.

In a survey, employees cited the people they work with and passion they have for their jobs makes it a job they love. They say they feel valued, encouraged and inspired, and appreciate that their input is sought.

“The office dynamics and relationships are team-oriented and the leadership is supportive when needed for assistance,” one employee says. “The ability to speak freely to my supervisor when needing guidance is invaluable. There’s recognition given when a job is well done and work-life balance is encouraged.”
