New CDs you need

Three recommended new CDs out today:

Joseph Arthur, “Lou”: Arthur pays stirring tribute to Lou Reed with heartfelt versions of 12 of Reed’s songs flecked with nothing more than piano, acoustic guitar and the memories of his fallen friend.

Down, “Down IV Part 2”: The power of the riff continues to compel Down, whose Black Sabbath-derived hard rock is as swampy and mystical as their native New Orleans.

Killer Be Killed, “Killer Be Killed”: Supergroups tend to be super on paper alone, but this new project featuring Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato, Soulfly’s Max Cavalera and Mastodon’s Troy Sanders (all of whom share vocal duties) along with former Mars Volta drummer Dave Elitch manages to be greater than the sum of its considerable parts thanks to an emphasis on melody as much as cinder-block heaviness.
