New CDs you need
Parquet Courts, “Sunbathing Animal”: Brooklyn’s Parquet Courts don’t sound like Pavement per see, but their latest album brings to mind that band’s third record, “Wowee Zowee,” in its free-range approach to indie rock where just about anything could be around the next corner — and often is.
F!@#ed Up, “Glass Boys”: Mercifully not as dense as 2011 concept album “David Comes to Life,” the new one from these progressive Toronto punks favors concision over both thematic and sonic heft. They haven’t scaled back their ambitions any, just made them a little easier to digest here.
The Orwells, “Disgraceland.”: A guilty pleasure is a pleasure no less. So why the nagging conscience for picking this one? Well, I should know better than to recommend these bratty Chicago garage rock wastrels whose disaffected blare we’ve all heard before. But hey, they’ve got ‘tude and tunes to spare and I can’t get the Doors-y swagger of “The Righteous One” out of my head.
