The Las Vegas Sun, which has never seen a union it didn't like (unless you're talking about a newspaper guild), is reporting that nearly 470 Clark County teachers dropped union membership this summer.
That's about 4 percent of the membership, which is a stunning exodus.
There will be a lot of back and forth about why this is. Let me give you my theory: The teacher's union is an impediment to good public school instruction -- and the teachers know it. If the school district could ever find the guts to make the school district union free (and that includes the management union, which is a whole separate travesty in and of itself), the children in Clark County public schools would instantly -- and I mean instantly -- get a far better education.
The single biggest stumbling block to better public education is the unionized education complex, IMHO.
