12 roosters seized in Nevada cockfighting arrest euthanized

ELKO — Authorities in Elko County say they’ve been forced to euthanize 12 roosters seized from a California man accused of engaging in illegal cockfighting.

Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Alex Perez told the Elko Daily Free Press the birds found in cages in the trunk of the suspect’s car on Tuesday were humanely put to death at a medical facility Thursday morning.

Perez says roosters couldn’t be returned or adopted because of their aggressive nature and the possibility they could carry avian flu.

Jose R. Ortiz of Salinas remained in the Elko County Jail Friday on $48,850 bail for seven charges, including conspiracy to conduct fights between animals.

A state trooper searched the car after he pulled Ortiz over for speeding on Interstate 80 and smelled marijuana.
