Armed intruder shot dead during attempted robbery Saturday ID’d
The man who was killed early Saturday after he entered a central valley apartment armed and was shot by one of its residents was identified Tuesday.
Lacy Howard, 44, died just after 3 a.m., when he was shot several times inside a unit at the Shelter Island apartment complex on the 3700 block of Swenson Street, near the Twain Avenue intersection. Police said Howard entered the apartment and was confronted by two people inside, also armed, who did not know him.
That’s when one of the people living there then shot Howard, who was intruding, several times. During the fatal shooting, Howard was able to fire at one of the residents, but that resident wasn’t seriously injured.
The wounded resident was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center; Howard died at the scene.
Court records show Howard was convicted in 1994 of one count of attempted robbery with a deadly weapon and three counts of robbery with a deadly weapon — all felonies. He was sentenced to 15 years prison.
In February, the Metropolitan Police Department named a Lacy Howard, 44, as a person of interest in a fatal shooting on the 4500 block of East Karen Avenue the night of Feb. 15. It was unclear as of Tuesday night whether that man was the same man killed Saturday.
Howard’s death was the 37th homicide Metro investigated this year. It’s unclear whether the resident will face charges.
