Holidays bring out flurry of concerts


The concert halls are decked for some not-so-silent nights. Las Vegas' rich tradition of community holiday music, all of it reasonably priced, continues with shows as diverse as the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the "Razzle Bam Boom Family Christmas Show."

Here's a list of upcoming concerts.

TODAY

7:30 p.m.: The College of Southern Nevada Choral Groups, featuring the student jazz singers and the Chamber Chorale under the direction of Mark Wherry, will perform a winter choral concert in the Nicholas J. Horn Theatre on the North Las Vegas campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave. Tickets are $5; call 651-5483.

FRIDAY

7 p.m.: The Sun City Summerlin Musicmakers Chorale will perform Christmas and Hanukkah favorites at the Starbright Theatre, 2215 Thomas Ryan Blvd. Tickets are $8; call 243-2953, 256-3829 or 255-0972. (The group also will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.)

SATURDAY

2 and 8 p.m.: The Las Vegas Philharmonic will present "Pops II: A Christmas Celebration" featuring the Philharmonic and guest solists Joan Sobel, Leslie Harper, Matt Newman and Tod Fitzpatrick, along with performances from the Las Vegas Master Singers and the University Children's Chorale, at Artemus Ham Hall, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. Tickets are $25-$65; call 895-2787.

SUNDAY

3 p.m.: The Musical Arts Chorus of the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society will perform Handel's "Messiah" and Mendelssohn's "Christus" in a concert that also includes the Musical Arts Singers performing selections from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" and " 'Twas the Night Before Christmas" at the Horn Theatre, College of Southern Nevada, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave., North Las Vegas. Tickets are $12 general admission and $9 for seniors, students, military and the disabled; call 651-5483.

DEC. 20

2 p.m.: The "Razzle Bam Boom Family Christmas Show" starring children's performers Mark Beckwith and Obediah Thomas will be presented at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. Tickets are $3; call 229-6383.

2 p.m.: The Gamble-Aires barbershop chorus will present "The Secret of Christmas" at the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center, 1771 Inner Circle Drive. Tickets are $8 at the door.

3 p.m.: The Vegas Tenors Concert starring Lou Ragland, Freddie Empire, Lambus Dean and Latif Shadi will be at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd. Admission is free; call 229-4800.

6 p.m.: The Las Vegas Brass Band performs holiday music at The Salvation Army Building, 2900 Palomino Lane. Admission is free; call 454-7367.

DEC. 21

2 p.m.: The Las Vegas Brass Band performs holiday music at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. Tickets are $5; call 454-7367.
