SNL character hits big-screen in 'MacGruber'

Movie: "MacGruber"

When: Opening Friday at local theaters

Cast: Will Forte, Val Kilmer, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Maya Rudolph, Powers Boothe

Director: Jorma Taccone

The story: Former special ops agent MacGruber returns to action when nemesis Dieter Von Cunth, armed with a nuclear warhead, sets out to destroy Washington, D.C.

The buzz: Yet another recurring "Saturday Night Live" character makes the jump from small- to big-screen hero. But will "MacGruber's" gadget-happy title character, inspired by the infinitely resourceful secret agent Richard Dean Anderson played in the 1985-1992 TV series "MacGyver" -- follow in the hit tradition of such comedy smashes as "The Blues Brothers" and "Wayne's World"? Or will he meet the same box-office indifference that greeted the likes of "It's Pat" and "Stuart Saves His Family"?
