School gardens coordinator recognized by school district
Karyn Johnson, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension school gardens coordinator, and the Cooperative Extension were honored at a recent Clark County School Board’s meeting. The honor was in recognition of the work Johnson and the Cooperative Extension have done to support the school garden programs.
Johnson was nominated by Cheryl Wagner, coordinator for the district’s School-Community Partnership program. The award was presented at the monthly school board meeting at the Edward Greer Education Center on June 18.
From the early stages, Cooperative Extension connected its lessons to the Nevada Academic Standards and CCSD curriculum. Its goal was to help teachers connect the outdoor environment to literacy, Next Generation Science Standards and additional Nevada academic content standards.
Proceeds from sale of ‘Brother vs. Brother’ renovated homes benefit Rebuilding Together
In Wednesday’s finale of HGTV’s “Brother vs. Brother,” the network’s home improvement and house flipping contest, Jonathan Scott was crowned the winner. The four-episode competition series featured fun-filled sibling rivalry as “Property Brothers” Jonathan and Drew Scott vied to see who could most successfully renovate and resell a Las Vegas fixer-upper.
The sale of both brothers’ renovated homes yielded a profit of $88,888, which will be donated to the Southern Nevada affiliate of HGTV’s longtime charitable partner, Rebuilding Together, a national organization that transforms the lives of low-income homeowners by providing crucial home repairs and revitalizing the communities in which they live.
The donation will be used for repairs to a facility owned by Transition Services Inc., a Las Vegas nonprofit organization that provides work for adults with developmental disabilities.
