Outdoor activities around Southern Nevada

HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, join a geologist for a close look at the Keystone Thrust Fault on a strenuous, four-mile hike along the White Rock Loop; for ages 10 and older. Also on Monday, get an introduction to Calico on a short walk on the trail; for ages 12 and older. On Tuesday, learn the stories behind the constellations on a moderate, three-mile night hike; for ages 12 and older. On April 21, seek out animal tracks, flowering plants and a flowing stream on a moderate, six-mile hike on the White Rock Loop; for ages 12 and older.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, view some of the venomous animals found in Red Rock during a tabletop presentation at the visitor center. On Wednesday, a tabletop exhibit will teach visitors about a variety of animals who live in Red Rock, their habitats, food chains and relations with other animals. On Saturday, enjoy Astronomy Day at Red Rock. Attractions will include a special filtered telescope that will allow visitors to view the sun during the day, a presentation on “Saturn — Lord of the Rings” at 7 p.m. and a laser-guided viewing of the night sky at
8:30 p.m.

Archaeo-Nevada Society, along with the Bureau of Land Management, seeks volunteers to help with Red Rock Canyon conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
