Shapiro Project opens new performance series

"Night Groov'in," a new Friday performance series in the studio theater at Reed Whipple Cultural Center, begins at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 with a jazz quartet, The Shapiro Project.

Tickets are $7 general admission, $5 teens and seniors, and $3 for children age 12 and younger.

The cultural center is at 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

The Shapiro Project was organized in 2000 by four University of Nevada, Las Vegas graduate students pursuing jazz studies degrees.

The group is led by guitarist and composer Eugene Shapiro. Other members include jazz musicians Boris Shapiro on drums, Eric Runquist on accoustic/electric bass and Phil Wigfall on alto/soprano saxophone.

Not only has the band played at several jazz festivals, it also has performed with many entertainers, including Michael Lengrand, Mulgrew Miller, Walt Weiskopf, the Temptations, Mills Brothers, David Liebman and Cedar Walton.

The quartet's music ranges from straight-ahead jazz to modal jazz, funk, Latin and contemporary jazz.
