The UNLV women's track and field team will open the outdoor season today with the second annual Desert Classic at Myron Partridge Stadium. Teams from Cal Lutheran, Cal Poly Pomona, Southern Utah, College of Southern Idaho and Utah Valley State will compete. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m. and track events at 12:15 p.m. Southern Utah is the only other Division I program participating. Cal Poly Pomona is Division II, Cal Lutheran is Division III and Southern Idaho and Utah Valley State are junior colleges. The five visiting teams will also hold a men's meet. UNLV does not have a men's team. UNLV assistant coaches Fred Sowerby and Lisa Austin will conduct the meet in place of coach Karen Dennis, who is out of town on family matters. Sowerby said he is looking for good things from the Lady Rebels in the sprints with Hydianne Harper and Donielle Twitty in the 100 meters, Alicia Tyson in the 200, Cheryl Allen in the 400 and Angela Harris in the 400 hurdles. Harper, a junior from Trinidad, won the 200 in the Western Athletic Conference indoor meet Feb. 22 in a meet-record 23.58.
Tyson, also a junior from Trinidad, finished seventh in the 200 meters in the NCAA indoor meet last week at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis with 23.62., earning All-America honors. Harris, a sophomore from Oakland, Calif., qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 400 hurdles last year. Twitty, Tyson, Dahhia Smith, a junior from Riverdale, Md., and Harper will run on the 400 relay team. Sophomore Safiya Ingram, a sophomore from Las Cruces, N.M., will compete in the discus and shot put. "She is the school-record holder in the discus at 157-plus feet. We are looking for good things from her," Sowerby said. The Lady Rebels will have next week off, then compete at the Fresno (Calif.) Relays on March 29. -- LVTC EVENT -- The Las Vegas Track Club will hold a 5K and a two-mile run on March 22 at Sunset Park. The runs start at 8 a.m. and are open to the public.
