EDITORIAL: 'The best in my memory'

Mike O'Callaghan was the best Nevada governor in my memory. While we've had several effective governors since Gov. Mike left office, he was as unique as the state he loved.

He was a governor of the people, not the special interests. His constituency was the plain folk of the state. He remembered the names of ordinary working stiffs from Elko to Las Vegas and greeted them with gusto on his frequent trips into the far reaches of the Silver State.

I'm going to miss Mike and our frequent conversations that ranged from politics to church to family. A lot of Nevadans will miss him. But he won't be forgotten. Great leaders leave their mark.

In Gov. Mike's case, he leaves a mark to which all future Nevada governors should aspire.

-- Sherman R. Frederick, Publisher
