In just a few days -- on Thursday, to be exact -- the long wait is over.

That interminable slog through basketball season. That slumbering shuffle through baseball season. Whatever it was all those runners, jumpers and swimmers were carrying on about in Greece a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, the most wonderful period of the American sports calendar is here: The National Football League is back.

To celebrate the return of America's favorite pastime -- and, again, we'll brook no silly dissent from baseball fans who apparently think Ike is still running things back in Washington -- the Review-Journal presents its annual consumer guide to Southern Nevada NFL team bars.

Here, based on the calls we received from bar owners and managers around town, are bars where rabid fans of particular NFL teams can watch this season's games while surrounded solely by fellow fans of their teams.

We make no claim that this listing is comprehensive. If your favorite bar doesn't appear here, it means that your favorite bar doesn't qualify, that nobody from your favorite bar called us, or that nobody from your favorite bar called us before the deadline.

It's that simple. Better luck next year.

Because we know how much sports fans like numbers, here's this year's statistical rundown:

• Bars this year: 57, versus 82 last year.

• Teams that added bars this year: Dallas Cowboys (2), Green Bay Packers (1), Minnesota Vikings (2), New England Patriots (3), Washington Redskins (1).

• Teams that lost bars this year: Arizona Cardinals (1), Buffalo Bills (2), Chicago Bears (5), Denver Broncos (1), Miami Dolphins (5), New Orleans Saints (2), New York Giants (1), New York Jets (2), Oakland Raiders (5), Pittsburgh Steelers (6), San Francisco 49ers (3), St. Louis Rams (1), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3).

• Teams with no bars on the list this year: Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans.

And, now, let the hoopla commence.
