THE ONLINE GUY: If you write it, it will come about: How a blog landed its author a job

Chalk one up for the power of creative Web logging.

Carolynn Duncan wanted to get the attention of a company she wanted to work for, and her words landed her a new job in only two days.

The blog -- Why Provo Labs Is Hiring Carolynn Duncan (www.whyprovolabswantstohire carolynnduncan.blogspot.com) -- was the idea of a friend already working for the company. Provo Labs is an Internet incubator company that helps startup businesses.

"I thought it (the blog) was a dumb idea. Too hype-y," Duncan, 25, said in a phone interview. "But my friend worked for Provo Labs and knew the culture better than I did.

"I wrote the blog on a Wednesday, the Geek Dinner was on Thursday and I got hired on Friday," she said. The dinner is a monthly gathering of the high-tech community in Provo and includes several people from Duncan's target employer.

Her first blog post, dated June 28, includes a list of events that brought the company to Duncan's attention. She shares her knowledge of company history and praises the principal players. It ends with a disclaimer about the idea to blog for a job: "P.S. This whole blog was Adam's idea. If it works, it was mine. If not, you should fire him and give me his job, unless you realize my tech skills are only slightly inferior to my very excellent communications/leadership/organization forté."

The blog post of June 29 carries the headline: "A Sampling of the Problems I Could Solve at Provo Labs" and details 11 areas Duncan believes she could have an impact. Her background in marketing and writing paid off, as she was hired on June 30.

In her next post -- "I AM the newest member of Provo Labs Team!!!" -- Duncan's enthusiasm and excitement shine brightly: "I have officially been hired as Phil Burns' executive assistant. I am tremendously excited to jump in and get things going! As someone stepping in from outside the Web 2.0 bubble, my first task is to Google all of the new words I'm learning, hopefully before anyone from Provo Labs realizes I don't know them. Sneaky."

Duncan said she created the blog on a whim and used as a forum. She said it made it possible for the company to learn about her.

The new job has already evolved into another venture, as Duncan and Burns have joined a team of about 10 to form a new company. The working name for the business is Provo Labs Solutions, and Duncan is the operations director.

"We're actually working out of Phil's basement. It's the classic startup experience," she said. The business will focus on software and product development for the Internet, including search-engine optimization tools, which help Web sites get better exposure on search engines.

I'm guessing Duncan will blog about it.
