The Las Vegas police officer who shot and killed a man early Monday during a domestic disturbance was identified as Byron Bunitsky, a six-year veteran of the force.
Bunitsky had responded to 606 Belsay Castle Court, near the Las Vegas Beltway and Durango Drive, after a woman called 911 and said her boyfriend was bipolar, suicidal and armed with knives, police said.
Police met the woman at her door, and when she exited she was followed by John Frank Jackman, who carried a large knife in each hand, police said.
When Jackman, 43, lunged at Bunitsky from a few feet away, Bunitsky fired two shots into Jackman, police said.
Bunitsky was involved in a December 2002 fatal shooting in which an intoxicated man with drugs in his system rammed a vehicle in to a police car and tried to run over an officer. Bunitsky fired his gun during the incident but did not hit the suspect. Another officer fired the fatal shot.
RAPPER'S DEATH
Slaying suspect found in Southern California
A man charged with killing a rapper at a Las Vegas recording studio was arrested Wednesday in Southern California.
The FBI Fugitive Task Force arrested Rontu Ary Elam, 27, in Inglewood, Calif.
Elam had been charged with murder and attempted murder in the June shooting outside Dunjun Studios, near Sahara Avenue and Interstate 15. He is awaiting extradition to Nevada.
The June 2 shooting killed rapper Roosevelt Hines, 30, who was known as "Mr. Looks" or "Master Looks." Thomas Richardson, 34, survived the shooting.
The two victims were sitting in a car arguing with several men in a parking lot outside the car. The argument escalated into gunfire, with more than 20 shots being fired by the gunman. Richardson and Hines drove from the parking lot and crashed on the street outside the studio.

RECRUITING PARTNERSHIP
Las Vegas police, Army joining forces
The Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Army announced a partnership on Wednesday to help recruit soldiers into the ranks of Las Vegas police.
At a ceremony outside City Hall, the Police Department officially joined the Army's Partnership for Youth Success, a program that gives soldiers access to thousands of jobs in the civilian work force. About 150 private and public employers are part of the program, including about 25 law enforcement agencies.
"This is the perfect match for two organizations with such high standards of integrity and honor," Army Col. Stephen Wilkins said.
Through the program, soldiers interested becoming Las Vegas police officers could apply and begin the hiring process up to six months before being discharged from the Army.
