City dumps rule against sleeping near urine or feces

REVIEW-JOURNAL

Sleep easy, fair citizens.

The Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday dumped a rule that made it a misdemeanor to sleep within 500 feet of a deposit of urine or feces.

That provision, which faced ridicule from civil libertarians, was mistakenly included in a broader ordinance that banned public urination and defecation, City Attorney Brad Jerbic has said.

The new ordinance, which takes out the rules against "knowingly" setting up a temporary, portable or open sleeping quarters, was passed unanimously by the City Council.

Jerbic said in August that rules on setting up camp near bodily deposits would be considered separately, though no proposal has yet reached the recommending committee, which reviews proposed ordinances before going in front of the City Council.
