In Case You Missed It: Sharks don’t care about cages

I’m not sure observing sharks, even inside a shark cage, will ever be described as serene.

Have you ever seen “Jaws?” Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week?” They’re not trying to sell peaceful, but every once in a while you can get caught in the moment.

Paul Whittaker was shark gazing (is that such a thing?) off Guadalupe Island in Baja California, Mexico in August when he and his cage mates got caught staring.

While the camera follows a shark swimming around the cage another great white rams his snout into an opening of the cage.

One of the divers gives the shark a strong nudge with his foot (not my first instinct) and off the shark swims. But I’m betting Whittaker’s heart took much longer to settle down.

Speaking of cages, an Australian dare devil named Shaun Harrington fought off a tiger shark with only a bird cage.

The plan was for Harrington to jump into the water and put the bird cage on his head for an “extreme” video shoot for Harrington’s clothing label, The Mad Hueys. But as soon as Harrington jumped in the water off Coolangatta, Queensland the shark made a beeline for the adrenaline junkie and all Harrington could do was swing the flimsy bird cage at the shark.

“I jumped into the water and was swimming with the cage and the next thing I knew, the bloody thing was coming at me,” Harrington told news.com.au.

Harrington quickly scurried back into the boat. Now he says, no more sharks. Now he says that.
