Police investigate burned body found in Las Vegas backyard

Reports of a house fire Tuesday afternoon led authorities to a burned body in the backyard of a home near Washington Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard.

But the house wasn’t on fire when firefighters responded to the 3:30 p.m. call, said Las Vegas police Lt. Barb Schmidt. Homicide detectives on scene Tuesday evening determined that the burned body was an elderly woman who set herself on fire in an act of suicide, according to Lt. Ray Steiber.

The scene is consistent with a suicide, he said.
