Helicopters drop water on Mount Charleston smoke columns

Crews still battling the Carpenter 1 Fire extinguished two new columns inside the burn area Thursday.

Helicopters dropped a load of water on each of the two new areas. One was directly above the Cathedral Rock picnic area, and the other above the Rainbow community, according to National Forest Service spokesman Jay Nichols.

The new smoke was inside the burn area and posed no threat to the residential area, Nichols said.
