Las Vegas names new interim fire chief

The city of Las Vegas will install a new interim fire chief beginning Monday following news the current interim chief is being called to military service.

On Wednesday the city announced it will hire former Clark County Fire Chief Steven Smith to lead the department from April 22 through June 30.

He will be paid a flat fee of $45,000, according to city spokeswoman Diana Paul.

Smith will replace interim Chief Scott Fuller, a colonel in the National Guard, who was called to service in Afghanistan.

The Fire Department has been led by an interim chief since February when former fire Chief Mike Myers moved to Chicago.

The city is in the process of recruiting for a full-time chief. The deadline for applications was April 5. The city expects to make a final selection in July.
