Fire damages vacant downtown apartment building Sunday morning

A vacant apartment building in downtown Las Vegas caught fire Sunday morning, according to a Las Vegas Fire and Rescue release.

Fire crews responded about 5 a.m. to a vacant apartment building at 2409 Sunrise Avenue, near Eastern Avenue and Fremont Street, after someone reported smoke in the area.

Upon arrival, Firefighters found no visible smoke from the street.

The fire was confined to a rear unit of the one-story apartment building, the release said. The vacant apartment building had no utilities connected to it.

The damage is estimated at $20,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The apartment building is boarded-up, but investigators said there was evidence that squatters were staying in the unit.
