Las Vegas Review-Journal selects assistant managing editor

Charlie Waters has been named assistant managing editor for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, it was announced Friday.

"Charlie is a very skilled and experienced journalist, editor and manager," said Michael Hengel, editor of the R-J. "He will be instrumental as he works with our staff of writers, photographers and editors to better serve our readers."

Waters, 63, has spent 42 years as a professional journalist. He joined Stephens Media four years ago as director of editorial support services, working with editors and reporters at the company's daily newspapers in Las Vegas and across the country.

Since 1984, he has worked as executive editor of The Fresno Bee, Reno Gazette-Journal and the Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine; night city editor of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times; and as a professional in residence at the University of Kansas.

Before that, he had reporting, editing or publishing roles at small daily or weekly newspapers in Arizona. A Kingman, Ariz., native, he graduated from the University of Arizona in 1969.
