Metro officer crashes police car, suffers minor injuries

A Las Vegas police officer lost control of his vehicle during an attempted traffic stop and crashed Monday morning, officials said.

The 23-year-old officer, who will be identified by Metro, was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Rainbow and Oakey boulevards at 6:38 a.m. when he activated his lights and siren and pulled into the intersection to chase a vehicle that ran the red light, according to a Metro press release.

The police car spun out of control on the wet pavement, slid sideways and drove up on the sidewalk, where it struck a light pole and a palm tree in the 2000 block of South Rainbow, north of Sahara Avenue, Metro spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said.

The officer was taken to University Medical Center with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
