UNR president earns raise, contract extension

The president of the University of Nevada, Reno was given a 3-percent raise and a 3-year extension on his contract by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents on Thursday.

Marc Johnson, 66, choked back tears after being lauded by NSHE chancellor Dan Klaich for his humility and his “focus on the mission” following his evaluation of work running UNR. Regents unanimously supported the raise and the extension.

Some UNR faculty senate members had asked that a vote on Johnson’s evaluation be held off until a survey could be conducted of the faculty.

Board of Regents chairman Kevin Page said there was nothing to stop the survey from going forward and any feedback would be appreciated. But, he added, it didn’t make sense to hold off a vote on the evaluation as faculty had other mechanisms to participate in the evaluation process that was voted on.

Johnson said afterwards that he was moved emotionally because the vote by the Regents was “affirmation of the operation of the entire university.”

Johnson’s original contract was to end in June 2015. Prior to the raise, Johnson made about $460,000 in total compensation. Last month the Board of Regents approved a $556,000 total compensation contract for UNLV’s new president Len Jessup.

Johnson has led the university since 2011 when then-President Milton Glick died in office.
