3 more apply for vacant Assembly seats in Las Vegas

Three more people have applied to fill two Las Vegas vacancies in the Nevada Assembly.

On Wednesday, the Clark County Commission announced it was seeking representatives for Assembly Districts 1 and 5 in Las Vegas who will serve at the special session of the state Legislature that Gov. Brian Sandoval has called no earlier than Oct. 7 and no later than Oct. 13.

The proposed Las Vegas NFL stadium deal will be voted on at the session.

Under the Nevada Constitution, county commissioners appoint members to the Legislature when a vacancy occurs between elections and a session is convened. Appointments must be of the same political party as the last person in the seat and be registered in the Assembly district.

Assembly District 1 (Democrat)

Nathan Atkins, 47: Senior global relationship manager at CenturyLink Business, president of Las Vegas WON Rotary Club, Army veteran.

Kevin Schmidt, 28: Nevada Youth Network board member, Air Force veteran, holds a master of public administration degree from UNLV.

Assembly District 5 (Republican)

Ron Coury, 64: Board member and partner at Square Panda Inc., Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation board member since 2014, Marine Corps veteran.

In Assembly District 1, Gary Fisher, Jo Cato and Louis DeSalvio applied Thursday. R. Garn Mabey Jr. applied for Assembly District 5.
