Northwestern Arizona seeing depleting aquifers because of farms

KINGMAN, Ariz. — Officials say northwestern Arizona is seeing depleting aquifers because of growth and water use by farming operations.

The Kingman Daily Miner reports that the Arizona Department of Water Resources said last week established farming operations are having a huge effect on Mohave County’s water supply.

Officials also said the state has precious little control over water in Mohave County or any Arizona county.

Kingman is home to the Northwest Basins Planning Area and is one of three the state designated a top priority for study because of a dramatic expansion in farming operations. La Paz and Cochise counties also have been labeled a priority.

La Paz County Supervisor Holly Irwin says companies from California and overseas have purchased thousands of acres of land in her county for crops.
