Secretary of state says no proof anti-Trump flier usage violated Nevada law

CARSON CITY — No evidence supports allegations that a woman reportedly registering voters in a Las Vegas parking lot while displaying anti-Trump fliers violated state election law, Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske said Tuesday.

The video posted on YouTube was taken by an unidentified man who remains off camera and claimed to work for Trump. He confronts the woman who is carrying clipboards with fliers on the back that read “Stand up to Trump,” and accuses her of violating state election law.

“You’re supposed to be nonpartisan, you can’t put anti-Donald Trump stuff on the back,” he said.

He records her as she walks to her car. “She’s committing voter fraud. She’s committing voter fraud everybody,” he says.

The woman said she was working for the Democratic Party.

Cegavske said she received numerous emails and phone calls complaining about alleged registration fraud after the video was posted online over the weekend.

But the Republican secretary of state said while state law prohibits a person working for voter registration agencies from displaying political preferences, there’s no evidence the woman in the video was employed by such a group. The prohibition typically applies to workers at the Department of Motor Vehicles, appointed field registrars and local election officials.

“There is no evidence that the person in video is employed by one of these defined groups,” Cegavske said in a statement. “In fact, the video does not show any voter registration activity taking place; it merely shows a conversation between two or more individuals in what appears to be a shopping center parking lot.”

Based on the video and state law, “there is not sufficient evidence of a violation of Nevada election law to warrant further investigation by this office,” Cegavske concluded.
