Reid slams Carson’s Muslim comments — VIDEO

Senator Harry Reid on Monday blasted Ben Carson after the GOP presidential hopeful said a Muslim could not be president, calling the comments, "vile, hateful rhetoric."

Carson, who on Sunday said he would  "not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation," has since walked back on his comments. He wrote on Facebook Monday night he believed a Muslim candidate would have to disavow Sharia law to have his support.

On Tuesday morning, Carson on ABC News seemed to defend his comments, saying America's problem was "our politically correct culture." CNN reported Carson said at a news conference in Ohio he doesn't care about a person's religious beliefs, as long as they "embrace our Constitution and are willing to place that above their religious beliefs."

After his comments Sunday, multiple Muslim civil liberties groups demanded he drop out of the presidential race. Reid took a similar stance on the Senate floor.

"Sadly, this is just another example of Republican candidates refusing to speak for three million Muslim Americans. We saw it last week with Donald Trump, as he refused to denounce bigotry at his own campaign rally," Reid said. "If these Republican candidates are incapable of going to bat for America’s Muslim community, then they shouldn’t run for President of the United States."

Reid's statement, which was also posted to his Facebook page, was shared nearly 47,000 times by Tuesday morning.
