David Lemieux revives career with fourth-round TKO over Glen Tapia

Gennady Golovkin had his fingerprints on the Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan undercard Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.

Two boxers on Golovkin’s long knockout list revived their careers with KO victories of their own.

David Lemieux, who fell to Triple G in October, pummeled Glen Tapia by technical knockout in the fourth round of the undercard main event.

Curtis Stevens displayed the power he felt when Golovkin beat him in 2013. Stevens’ vicious right hand earned him a win over Patrick Teixeira.

Golovkin’s name was brought up multiple times leading up to the Alvarez-Khan fight. Golovkin is a possible opponent for Alvarez.

Lemieux, a former International Boxing Federation middleweight champion, said he learned a lot from the Golovkin loss.

“Triple G is a great fighter, but you gotta keep your hands up at all times, that’s the rule of boxing,” Lemieux said.

Lemieux didn’t need to keep his hands up against heavy underdog Tapia. Lemieux stifled Tapia with a flurry of power punches, which forced Tapia’s trainer, Freddie Roach, to stop the fight in the fourth round.

Tapia shouted at his trainers not to end the bout.

Frankie Gomez made easy work out of veteran Mauricio Herrera in a unanimous decision by three scores of 100-90.

Gomez, also trained by Roach, displayed speed and power to fluster Herrera during the 10-round welterweight fight.

The 35-year-old Herrera has had tough fights with top welterweights Danny Garcia and Jose Benavides, but it appears those days are behind him. Herrera, who had a large cut under his left eye, struggled to produce offense against Gomez.

“It feels good to get this victory,” Gomez said. “I trained really hard, and it paid off. I’m ready to take on my next challenge and take on the best at 140. I want to thank my fans, and I’m glad I was able to put on a good show for them.”

Stevens started the pay-per-view portion of the card with his victory over Teixeira.

Stevens, who returned to the ring after a 19-month layoff, delivered a counter right hook to drop the Brazilian.

Teixeira struggled to get up and wobbled back onto the ropes, forcing the referee to end the bout at 1:04 of the second round.

The Brooklyn, New York, native Stevens (28-5, 21 KOs) handed the 25-year-old Teixeira (26-1, 22 KOs) the first loss of his career.

“They wanted to put the young lion in the jungle,” Stevens said. “It wasn’t happening tonight. The name of the game is to knock people out, and that’s what I did tonight. I feel great to get back into the game after my one and a half year break.”
