Rebels can’t solve Texas bullpen in baseball loss

Patrick Mathis had a home run and a double and scored twice for Texas in its 7-0 win over UNLV in a nonconference baseball game Sunday in Austin, Texas.

Longhorns starter Connor Mayes worked around four hits and three walks in four shutout innings, and four relievers, starting with Travis Duke (1-0), blanked the Rebels (1-2) on one hit and one walk and struck out five.

UNLV starter Ben Wright (0-1) gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Kacy Clemens went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Texas (2-1), which had a 10-5 edge in hits.

A.J. VanMeetren went 2-for-4 for UNLV, which left the bases loaded in the first inning and had no extra-base hits.
