UNLV roundup: Men’s golf squad wins team, individual titles in opening tournament

Paced by junior John Oda’s third career individual victory, the UNLV men’s golf team shot a final-round-low 4-under-par 284 on Sunday to tie for first at the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The Rebels finished the 16-team, 54-hole tournament at 1-under 863 along with Texas-El Paso, which shot a final-round 2-over 290. Colorado finished third at 1-over 865.

Oda finished at 10-under 206 after a final-round 3-under 69 for a three-stroke victory in the 92-golfer field.

UNLV junior Shintaro Ban was third at 6-under 210. Other Rebels scorers were freshman Justin Kim (218, tied for 10th), freshman Yash Majmudar (221, tied for 17th), sophomore Harry Hall (227, tied for 42nd) and senior Taylor Montgomery (233, tied for 64th).

Kim officially participated as an individual, so his score didn’t count toward UNLV’s team tally.

* WOMEN’S SOCCER: At Santa Barbara, Calif., Amanda Ball and Shaelan Murison scored first-half goals for UC Santa Barbara, which dealt UNLV (5-2) its first shutout of the season with a 2-0 setback. The Gauchos (7-0) have given up two goals this season.

* MEN’S SOCCER: At Moraga, Calif., Connor Ryan scored the lone goal for UNLV in its 4-1 loss to Saint Mary’s (1-3-2). The Rebels (2-4) were outshot 20-5, including 12-1 in the second half.
