UNLV roundup: Volleyball team opens with two victories

UNLV opened its volleyball season with two victories in the UNLV Invitational on Friday at Cox Pavilion, downing UC Santa Barbara 3-0 and Albany 3-1.

Bree Hammel had team highs of 13 kills and 22 digs against the Gauchos, helping the Rebels win by scores of 29-27, 25-16 and 27-25.

Alyssa Wing added 11 kills, Elsa Descamps 10 kills and Alexis Patterson 40 assists for UNLV.

Against the Great Danes, Wing had 18 kills and 17 digs. Hammel added 17 kills, Descamps 12 kills and Patterson 53 assists in the Rebels’ 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 victory.

* WOMEN’S SOCCER: At Johann Memorial Field, Dakota Blazak, Katie Ballou and Lily Sender scored to lift the Rebels to a 3-2 victory over Northern Arizona in the UNLV Invitational.

UNLV, which held a 19-7 edge in shots, has opened a season 3-0 for the first time since 2010 and the third time in program history.

The Rebels built a 3-1 lead and then held on after a 30-minute lightning delay.

* MEN’S SOCCER: At Norfolk, Va., Niko Klosterhalfen had two goals and Sebastian Hauret three assists to lead Old Dominion to a 3-1 win over UNLV in both teams’ nonconference season opener.

Danny Musovski, who had eight of the Rebels’ 12 shots, scored their lone goal in the 23rd minute on an assist from Shota Takada to tie the score at 1.

Tyler Edwards also scored for the Monarchs, who had a 16-12 edge in shots.
