Flu vaccines: The Southern Nevada Health District's flu vaccine clinics began Sept. 21 at all locations where patients can receive the injectable, quadrivalent flu vaccine. UNLV building designs: The UNLV School of Medicine has selected two architectural firms to design its medical education building: Local firm Tate Snyder Kimsey and Los Angeles-based CO Architects have extensive experience in large and complex institutional, academic, medical education, and health care projects. Medical bill streamlining: Through the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development, new legislation, sponsored by Gov. Brian Sandoval on behalf of the office and passed by the Nevada Legislature, will help expedite medical licensing for the Health & Medical Services Industry. The Expedited Licensure Bill, which went into effect July 1, allows for medical professionals, currently in good standing in another state, to receive licensure to practice in Nevada within 60 days. New nursing program: Centennial Hills Hospital recently launched a partnership with Nevada State College nursing students. Beginning in September, eight nursing students from Nevada State College are embarking upon a new model of learning as they care for patients on the sixth floor of Centennial Hills Hospital, 6900 N. Durango Drive, once a week for the next two years. Known as the Caring Science Unit, the students are mentored by Centennial Hills Hospital nurses, who serve as Caring Coaches. In their role, they teach both clinical skills and caring practices to students as they work with patients.

$55 Mammograms planned in October: The Valley Health System is offering $55 mammogram screenings weekdays in October. A physician's order is required and should be brought to the appointment. Trial participants sought: The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health is recruiting participants for a new, multicenter Alzheimer's disease treatment trial, Rasagiline Rescue (R2), designed to determine if treatment with Rasagiline is associated with improved brain glucose metabolism and improvement in memory. Men and women 50 to 90 suffering from mild to moderate forms of Alzheimer's disease are needed to complete the free, six-month study. Other qualifications for trial participation include having a study partner willing and able to comply with required procedures and at least eight years of education. Health and diabetes fest coming to hospital: Desert Springs Hospital is set to host its 24th annual Health & Diabetes Fest from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 10 in the hospital lobby, 2075 E. Flamingo Road. The event is hosted by the Diabetes Treatment Center at the hospital. Planned activities include the first 200 adults to arrive receiving a free flu shot, a farmers market and hands-only CPR sessions. The Regional Transportation Commission is donating 400 bike helmets to the public. Children's and adult helmets will be available, and attendees have the opportunity to have a professional cyclist autograph the helmets. Free blood pressure checks; body mass index, diabetes risk test, stroke risk scorecards, eye exams, foot exams and pulmonary function screenings are planned.

Better Breathers Club presentation planned: The American Lung Association in Nevada is set to present a talk on Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 13 at the club meeting at Centennial Hills Hospital, 6900 N. Durango Drive. Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency is a genetic condition that may result in serious lung disease in adults, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and/or liver.
